The Harris House - How Addiction Affects Men

How Addiction Affects Men

June 21, 2023 Posted by Patrick Carleton Addiction, Family, Physiological

Abuse of drugs and alcohol may have severe impacts on people, including males who may experience particular difficulties in their battle with addiction. Abuse of substances can have an impact on one’s physical and mental health, relationships, livelihood, and general quality of life. But getting assistance and the tools they need from a professional addiction treatment facility, like The Harris House in St. Louis, can help men conquer addiction and achieve long-lasting recovery.

Men’s physical health is one of the ways that drug and alcohol usage can have an influence on them. A number of health problems, such as liver damage, cardiovascular troubles, respiratory problems, and a weaker immune system, can be brought on by substance addiction. Due to physiological differences, men in particular may be more likely to experience specific health issues linked to substance usage. For instance, consuming too much alcohol can lower a man’s testosterone levels, which can cause erectile dysfunction, infertility, and mood swings. Male sexual dysfunction and hormonal abnormalities can both result from drug misuse. Addiction can have a severe and long-lasting physical toll on a person, which can affect both their health and daily functioning.

Abuse of alcohol and drugs can also have a serious impact on one’s mental health. Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance misuse frequently co-occur. Due to traditional ideals of masculinity and the stigma associated with mental health, men may have additional difficulties in seeking treatment for mental health disorders. This can lead to a reluctance to seek therapy and a propensity to use drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism or form of self-medication. However, this pattern of drug misuse as a coping strategy for mental health problems can aggravate the underlying mental health illnesses, worsening symptoms and making the recovery process more difficult.

Men’s relationships, professions, and general quality of life can all suffer from substance usage. Relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners can become strained as a result of addiction, which can lead to isolation, a lack of faith, and shattered connections. Substance misuse can increase interpersonal and financial stress in the workplace by increasing absenteeism, decreasing productivity, and even job loss. A man’s entire quality of life may also be impacted by substance misuse, which may result in a lower sense of self-worth, a lack of interest in formerly pleasurable pursuits, and a general decline in life satisfaction.

Men who seek assistance from a specialist addiction treatment facility can get the support and resources they need to conquer their addiction. The Harris House provides comprehensive and tailored addiction therapy that takes into account the social, emotional, mental, and physical ramifications of addiction.

Men’s physical health, emotional health, relationships, professions, and overall quality of life can all suffer from drug and alcohol usage. Men can, however, get the assistance and resources they need to beat addiction and experience long-term recovery by asking for help. The Harris House can support men on their path to long-term healing and a happier, more rewarding life.

Don’t be afraid to get assistance if you or someone you love is battling with drug or alcohol misuse.
