Codeine

Comprehensive Residential Codeine Addiction Treatment Program

CALL US TODAY

314-631-4299

Codeine is a moderately strong opiate used for pain relief and for cough suppression. It is used clinically to treat pain and coughing, but it is often abused because of its euphoric side effects.

Codeine is an addictive drug with many common symptoms of other opiates. It is essentially a depressant of the central nervous system, leading to feelings of relaxation, euphoria, and drowsiness. The effects are perceived as pleasant, and you may become addicted to the effects, and in turn, the drug. The higher the dosage, the more likely a person will become addicted the longer the drug usage does on.

Codeine is not as widely abused as some drugs, but it might start a person in the direction of opiate abuse. An opiate addiction can happen quickly and be very difficult to overcome. The tolerance to opiates like codeine can increase quickly, which increases the user’s demand for the drug. In an attempt to feel the same high if the prescription drug source is no longer available, the user often turns to street drugs like herorin as a substitute.

The first step in our codeine addiction treatment program is a medical detox with a licensed doctor to keep patients as safe and comfortable as possible. After the medical detox is complete, we move on to the next steps in the rehab process.

How do I know if I’m addicted to Codeine?

Due to the fact that codeine is used to treat so many common health issues, such as coughs and pain, it is possible for anyone to become addicted to it. It is also especially dangerous because one needs to ingest a large amount of codeine to get the desired effect; codeine needs to be mixed with other intoxicants such as alcohol. This will likely lead to an overdose.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), almost 17,000 deaths due to overdose from opiates occurred in 2011. In 2013, SAMHSA estimated that 1.9 million Americans had an opiate use disorder the previous year.

There are many signs of codeine abuse to look for if you suspect you or a loved one is addicted to codeine, but the most common sign of codeine abuse is nausea.

Other signs of codeine addiction and abuse include:

  • Mood swings
  • Drowsiness
  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach pain
  • Changes in vision
  • Constipation

If you have any or several of these physical or behavioral symptoms, please contact Harris House today at 314-328-7938 to talk with one of our counselors about an evaluation and admission.
